Auckland Domain & Museum

If you want variety without driving all over the city, the Domain is hard to beat. You’ve got sweeping lawns, big old trees, and seasonal gardens that always look beautiful. In spring, the blossoms make everything soft and romantic, while autumn brings golden tones and crunchy leaves.

The Wintergardens are another gem — moody glasshouses with tropical plants and reflections everywhere you look. Perfect for a different vibe, or as a backup if the weather turns.

Then there’s the Museum. Those white steps and columns feel grand and timeless, and they add a totally different backdrop to the greenery nearby. In one location, you can get casual shots on the grass, romantic moments under the trees, and something more elegant at the Museum.

Muriwai Beach

Muriwai is for couples who love a bit of drama. The black sand feels different to anywhere else in Auckland, and the cliffs make every shot feel epic. On a calm day, it’s moody and cinematic. On a windy day, it’s full of energy, with hair and clothes moving in the breeze — and honestly, that usually makes for the most natural, beautiful photos.

Sunset here is unbeatable. The light bounces off the water and sky, wrapping everything in golden tones. Walk along the shoreline, climb up to the rocks, or just stand still and soak it in — Muriwai gives you photos that feel alive.

Bethells Beach (Te Henga)

Bethells has a magic all of its own. The sand dunes are incredible for photos — soft, rolling, and golden at sunset. They give a completely different look to the beach just a short walk away, so you can get a lot of variety in one session.

The cliffs and headlands make a dramatic backdrop, while the wide-open beach often feels more private than Piha or Muriwai. Couples love it because you can have playful, fun photos running up the dunes, followed by quiet, romantic moments with the waves behind you.

It’s a little bit of a drive, but it’s worth every minute.

Cornwall Park

Cornwall Park is for couples who want something timeless and easy. You don’t need to trek far to get stunning shots — just wander down an avenue of trees or sit by one of the stone walls, and you’ve got a background that feels romantic and natural.

In spring, the blossoms are breathtaking. In summer, the grass is lush and green. Autumn is warm and golden, and even winter has its charm with bare branches and soft light. Every season gives you a different look.

Because it’s central and accessible, it’s also a great option if you’re short on time but still want engagement photos that look polished and personal.

Orewa Beach

Orewa feels completely different from the West Coast beaches. It’s light, bright, and relaxed, with soft golden sand and gentle waves. Perfect if you’re after a casual, summery vibe.

The long stretch of beach gives you plenty of space to wander, and the dunes nearby add texture and variety. It’s great for playful photos — splashing in the shallows, piggyback rides, or just walking hand-in-hand with the ocean behind you.

Orewa is also an easy choice if you want somewhere close to cafes and parking. It keeps things stress-free while still giving you that “holiday by the beach” feeling in your photos.

Choosing the Best Location for You

The truth is, there’s no single “best” location. It depends on who you are as a couple. Do you want something bold and adventurous like Piha or Muriwai? Something soft and romantic like Cornwall Park? Or something relaxed and coastal like Orewa?

What matters most is that the location feels like you. When you’re comfortable and having fun, that’s when the magic happens. The backdrop just helps tell the story.
